IPL reading: Calculate a cricket innings' current run rate

Current run rate describes runs scored per over so far. Convert cricket over notation into valid balls before doing the arithmetic. Start with the correct fixture and its current status, then read the fields relevant to that question.

This section explains IPL and cricket information. Use the competition website for current fixtures and results, and consult the relevant service for its viewing rights and availability.

Choose the right match record

Read both teams, fixture date and competition. A score from a previous meeting can remain visible in search results or saved images. Use the current competition record when describing an actual match.

Understand the terms before comparing numbers

For an illustrative 75 runs after 10 overs, the current rate is 7.5 per over. For 10.3 overs, the denominator is ten and a half overs because three of six valid balls have been bowled; it is not 10.3 decimal overs.

Keep the latest status with the score

Check whether the fixture is scheduled, in play, interrupted or finished. A score without its innings and time can give the wrong impression. The separate guide below works through the specific reading task in more detail.

Follow a match in context

  1. Confirm the teams, match date and competition before interpreting a score.
  2. Read the innings label, runs, wickets and overs together. Check whether the display says live, innings break or result.
  3. For a chase, read the target and any revised conditions before calculating what remains.
